TUKAR SUCCESS STORY IN BUKIT PUCHONG

Single mum enjoys rewarding trade with Tukar - The Star 30 January 2012

PUCHONG: Single mother Jessica Wong is constantly trying to strike a balance between caring for a teenage daughter and running a sundry shop. Since the store's opening nearly 10 years ago, Wong knew that the only way she could better her life was to modernise it. But the 42-year-old thought it was just a dream until she learned about Transformasi Untuk Kedai Runcit (Tukar) or Sundry Shop Transformation programme.
“I read about it in the newspapers in March last year and I immediately applied.
“By the end of March, they came in, and in two weeks I was back in business,” she said.
The programme provided Wong with a RM60,000 soft loan to cover renovation costs. But what she felt was equally if not more important were the skills she learned on how to run a modern business. From product display to stock-keeping and management principles, Wong learned to look at her business as not just a sundry shop, but a whole customer experience.
And her decision to tukar (change) has definitely paid off. Since taking part in the programme, Wong had seen her revenue increase by 30% in the first three months before it skyrocketed to 60%.
Wong was one of 101 sundry shop owners who were selected to receive the soft loan plus mentorship under Tesco Malaysia on how to run a modern retail business. Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Sung-Hwan Do said they provided comprehensive training for the programme participants
